Since my daughter is now 1 I have begun to try to introduce cow's milk. However, after about 10 minutes of giving it to her she starts coughing and getting very congested and has a mucusy wheezing. If I give her benedryl it goes away in a few hours. But, once I give her the milk it comes back. I don't understand because she drinks milk-based formula, and she also had a skin allergy test done and it showed that she was not allergic to milk. What is happening here?
Milk allergy in 1-year -old?
She may not be allergic, she may just have an intolerance. Stop giving her the milk-it's not crucial for her development. Give her vanilla soy milk instead and stop with the cow's milk. Formula is designed to be easier to digest and is made up of other things, too, not just milk proteins. I am continually amazed by how many people drink milk when it's just not designed for human consumption. Doctors will agree that she doesn't need milk at all. Give her soy--it's healthier and will help boost her immunity at the same time. Clearly, she's having some sort of reaction, so you need to stop giving it to her, as it can actually form an allergy the more often you irritate her body by the foreign substance.
Reply:take her to the doctor and dont give her the milk anymore..there obviously is an allergy somewhere and it has to be checked out further.
Reply:Check with your Doctor in regards to this matter. He or she just might recommend soy milk in place of cows milk. Good Luck.
Reply:It could be something in the pasteurization process. However, for her safety, don't give her anymore milk. It could get worse. Often times, the formula doesn't have all the ingredients milk has. The doctor will probably have to run some more tests on her though.
Best of luck to both of you.
Reply:If she is showing such symptoms after each use, try giving her soy milk. If she is still showing them, I would avoid milk altogether.
Reply:Give her soy milk instead.
Reply:Well, the milk in formula is processed to be more digestable.
There are food sensitivities that are not truly allergies that won't show up on a skin-prick test. For example, I'm sensitive to fish and wine. I get a huge headache and I vomit. It's not an allergy, but it is a known sensitivity. I can have a tiny bit (for example, the anchovies in Worchestire sauce when it's used as a marinade) but I can't sit down and eat a salmon fillet!
The test could also be wrong.
I would reccomend avioding dairy for now and trying to reintroduce it later. How many times has she had a reaction to the milk? Does she react to all dairy?
You could try another kind of milk, like goat's milk or rice milk as well.
Reply:Absolutely and will probably be allergic the rest of her life.Hence "LACTOSE FREE"
Reply:It could e to early for your daughter. The previous dr did that to my daughter at 1 we had to go back to formula then she couldn't us the enfamil with iron we actually had to use the enfamil prosobee for another year. Luckily with a script from the dr , WIC covered it..
Reply:As the others said, check with your doctor, and try soy milk. Another option that worked well with a friend of mine, however, is goat's milk. If you think about it, goat's milk is naturally made to nourish a much smaller animal than cow's milk. Cow's milk is very heavy for such a little person. Hope she gets better!
Reply:Allergy tests in infants and toddlers can be very inaccurate. It can take a child a year or two for the test results to match their symptoms.
If you're sure it's the milk causing it, stop giving her milk. I know people will slam me for this, but people don't NEED milk. There is nothing in cow's milk that can't be found in other foods. Just be sure she's getting those other nutrients in other foods, and she will be absolutely fine.

Before considering soy as a valid alternative, please realize that many kids who can't tolerate milk also can't do soy. Additionally, research has shown that soy can lead to a whole slew of health problems.

Reply:see how she does with thinner milk- try the 2% or fat free, it could be the thickness of the milk.
But it does sound like an allergy.
Reply:Cows milk is very different than formula. It is harder to digest. It does sound like your daughter could very well have an allergy of some sort and it does sound like it could very well be from the milk. My daughter gets ear infections every time she drinks milk, so we have just quit giving it to her. I found a website that you can do a milk allergy test for free and included the link to it. I have also included two websites that have some good information that I thought you would be interested in. Hopefully they can shed some light on this matter and help you decide if you need to visit the pediatrician or not.
Reply:try soy milk or rice milk or even goats' milk. But , I will advise you to talk to her doctor.
Reply:Sounds like an upper respitory infection/flu/cold or even asthma. Milk causes more mucus which causes her to become congested and wheezy. I would consult her doctor.
