Still having trouble with westie skin. sores etc.have been to vet, says its food allergy. any suggestions on w

Has your vet done skin scrapings and tried to grow them to rule out parasites or infections? Even if food allergies are the root problem the sores can become infected.

I have had good luck with Nutro Lamb and Rice. The lamb is usually better than chicken or other animals for the allergy prone dogs. If you have tried that then you can consider making your dog's food.

Also change your shampoo to a prescription shampoo from your vet,or a good one from your groomer that is anti microbial.

And, there are dermatogists in veterinary care. They deal specifically with allergies and skin problems. They do have allergy shots for dogs that have about a 67% success rate, and there are antihistamines that may help as well.

Best of luck!

It's doing great things for pets with severe skin problems.

The limited, and very high quality ingredients have worked wonders on super sensitive pets.

Natura Pet (the company that makes it) also puts out a fantastic supplement. California Natural Skin and Coat Supplement is great. Dogs love it and you see results fast.

www.naturapet.com for more information on both products.

Also, Ark Naturals puts out a whole line of natural, herbal supplements.

Reply:My mom has a Westie cross for whom she makes all his food. She uses veggies, rice, meat, and fish. Also she bathes him once a week using Aveeno bath (an oatmeal solution). After 4 months of this, his skin and fur is absolutely beautiful. Mind you it takes a lot of time to make the food. Not all that expensive because she gets the meat on sale and buys in bulk. She puts servings in small sandwich bags and freezes them, and nukes them when it is meal time. Also for his teeth he gets raw carrots, and apple wedges. Good luck. www.mastiffs360.com
Reply:IVD rabbit and Potato is a prescription dog food for allergies, it is a great food, but being prescription is pricy. Wellness makes a new line of foods called Simple Solutions with limited ingredients. They have a Venison, and well as duck formulas. Untill you figure out what the dog is allergic to you will need to limit the diet to one specific protein source(ex:rabbit). What ever you feed you want to check the ingredient panel and stay away from corn wheat and soy, these are common allergens. Poultry is also a common allergen, although not as common as corn.
